Akebia Therapeutics reports Vafseo growth and Auryxia sales decline in Q2
Akebia Therapeutics announced second‑quarter results showing strong performance for its anemia drug Vafseo and a sharp drop in sales of its kidney‑disease product Auryxia. Vafseo generated $21.3 million in net product revenue, up 60 % year‑over‑year and 34 % sequentially, and the treatment reached more than 10,500 active patients, a 41 % increase from the prior quarter. Total company revenue fell to $49.1 million, down 21.5 % from a year earlier, driven by Auryxia revenue falling to $25.5 million from $47.2 million as generic competition and pricing pressure intensified.
The company also reported an interim analysis of the VOICE trial, which met its predefined stopping criteria. The study of 2,116 patients demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in the composite endpoint of all‑cause mortality and hospitalization, with a 10 % drop in hospitalizations (p = 0.0016). CEO John Butler said the results confirmed the drug’s efficacy and supported continued commercial expansion. Commercial Chief Nick Grund noted a 17 % rise in Vafseo prescribers and the highest quarterly new‑patient starts since launch, with about one‑third of prescribers now affiliated with large dialysis organizations outside U.S. Renal Care.
