Akeem Statin, a 36‑year‑old resident of Penns Grove, New Jersey, was sentenced to eight years in state prison after pleading guilty to second‑degree unlawful possession of a handgun and a second‑degree firearms‑possession prohibition. He must serve five years before becoming eligible for parole.

The incident occurred on October 27, 2023, when New Jersey State Police stopped Statin on the Atlantic City Expressway for driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph and showing signs of intoxication. During the stop, officers discovered a loaded handgun in the vehicle’s center console. Statin told troopers he had consumed "a couple of drinks and a couple of shots" before driving.
