AKEL seeks clarifications on pro-Israel lobby activity in Cyprus Parliament
The AKEL political party has formally requested clarifications from the President of the Cyprus House of Representatives regarding the use of parliamentary facilities for an event involving the ‘Israel Allies Foundation’. The event facilitated the formation of a joint parliamentary group consisting of members from DISY, DIKO, and ELAM.
AKEL spokesperson George Loukaides raised several concerns in a letter to the President, including the approval process for the event, the institutional status of the new parliamentary group, and the potential commitments made by its members. He also questioned the sources of funding and support for the group’s activities.
Furthermore, AKEL expressed concern regarding lawmakers collaborating with organizations that promote the interests of third countries, suggesting such actions might conflict with United Nations resolutions and international law—principles upon which the Republic of Cyprus bases its stance on the termination of the occupation. AKEL has proposed establishing a clear institutional framework for such groups, requesting an investigation by the Ethics Committee and a discussion at the next meeting of party leaders to ensure transparency and accountability.
