AKEL seeks progressive change through united forces for 2028 elections
AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou has outlined the party's primary objective for the upcoming 2028 presidential elections: achieving progressive change through the united efforts of forces committed to a common progressive program.
Speaking at the presentation of a historical volume regarding the history of the Left in Cyprus in Nicosia, Stefanou noted that the experience of the Left's presidency in 2008 demonstrated that governing in a world dominated by powerful institutions and capital presents significant challenges. He emphasized that such challenges are difficult to address without collective effort and unity among the country's progressive forces.
Stefanou also reflected on the party's historical relationship with power, citing past collaborations and its ability to shape political agendas that align with societal sentiments. He referenced historical milestones, including the party's critical support for Archbishop Makarios in 1962 to defend Cypriot independence, and its subsequent strategy of requiring programmatic frameworks for supported candidates, such as the 1983 Minimum Program.
