Akhilesh Yadav criticizes Maharashtra Marathi language test for drivers

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has criticized a new mandate in Maharashtra that requires taxi, auto-rickshaw, and app-based cab drivers to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Marathi language.

Yadav argued that while regional languages should be respected, using language as a requirement for employment could politicize linguistic identity and undermine the constitutional right of citizens to seek work across India. He expressed concern that such policies could create social discord and place undue pressure on economically vulnerable drivers.

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik defended the initiative, which involves Regional Transport Office teams conducting 16-question tests to assess drivers. Sarnaik dismissed Yadav’s criticism, accusing him of politicizing the issue and suggesting he focus on upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh instead.
