Aki Lindén opposes merging Finland's welfare areas
Social Democratic Party (SDP) Member of Parliament Aki Lindén has rejected proposals to reduce the number of welfare areas in Finland during the next parliamentary term. Lindén argues that there is currently no justification for merging these areas, noting that most parliamentary parties have expressed reluctance toward such mergers.
Lindén warns that redrawing regional boundaries would divert energy and resources away from improving healthcare services and toward organizational restructuring. Furthermore, she contends that mergers would not inherently generate savings; instead, they could incur significant costs—potentially reaching the billion-euro range—due to administrative changes and the harmonization of salaries. According to Lindén, the financial challenges facing welfare areas stem from funding criteria failing to match actual service needs and cost developments, rather than the number of regions.
