Akita Garrison sergeant dismissed for stealing colleague's property

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Akita Garrison has issued a disciplinary dismissal to a 23-year-old Sergeant First Class belonging to the 21st Infantry Regiment.

The individual is accused of stealing personal belongings valued at approximately 18,000 yen from a colleague's room within the garrison in October 2025. The stolen items were reportedly sold to a recycle shop for cash. The theft came to light after the victim consulted with the unit.

The sergeant stated that the theft was motivated by work-related stress and expressed deep regret. Hiroyuki Kiyota, commander of the 21st Infantry Regiment, issued an apology and stated that the unit will focus on thorough education for all personnel to prevent recurrence and restore trust.
