Akita Prefecture official under investigation for misconduct during online briefing
Akita Prefecture is conducting a re-investigation into a male official from the Industrial and Labor Department following a controversial online press conference regarding a major AI data center project. During the remote briefing on August 6, the official, a supervisor for corporate attraction, appeared on camera wearing informal attire resembling a bathrobe or loungewear with an open chest. He was also observed smoking a cigarette and chatting with others during the session.
The official initially claimed he was at home due to poor health after a business trip to Tokyo. However, public scrutiny has intensified as social media users pointed out that the background wallpaper and room decor in the video closely resemble those of a love hotel. While the prefecture confirmed the official was in Tokyo during his business trip, they are currently verifying his exact location and whether he was indeed at home as stated.
Gen'etsu Takahashi, the Director of the Industrial and Labor Department, issued a formal apology, stating that such conduct is “unacceptable” for a public servant. The official has admitted to smoking during the session and expressed regret.
