Akkuş sugar bean production grows significantly in Ordu
Sugar bean production in the Akkuş district of Ordu has seen substantial growth due to various agricultural supports and projects. According to Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Bayram Ay, production has risen from 25 tons on 200 decares in 2012 to an estimated 2,200 tons across approximately 11,700 decares in 2026.
To support this expansion, seed distribution has been a key factor. In 2026, 390 kilograms of seed were distributed to 29 producers for 65 decares of land. Over the last three years, a total of 6,640 kilograms of seed was provided to 292 producers covering 1,105 decares.
Ordu Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mehmet Hilmi Güler emphasized the necessity of water management for maintaining yields, noting that an irrigation facility project is being prepared to mitigate risks from inconsistent rainfall. The harvest festival, organized in collaboration with the Akkuş Chamber of Agriculture, included symbolic harvesting by local officials and representatives from the Eastern Black Sea Project (DOKAP) Regional Development Administration.
