Akol Akon signs record-breaking transfer with Colorado Rapids
The Colorado Rapids have signed 17-year-old Sydney FC winger Akol Akon in a multi-million-dollar transfer. The deal is reported to be worth an initial $1.5 million AUD, potentially rising to $2.5 million AUD, making it a record-breaking sale for a teenager by an Australian club.
Akon will remain on loan with Sydney FC for the 2026-27 A-League season to gain further experience before officially joining the MLS side in July 2027. His contract with Colorado runs through the 2030-31 season with an option for 2031-32. The agreement also includes a sell-on clause for Sydney FC.
Akon, who holds the record as Sydney FC’s youngest-ever men’s player, noted that the move was influenced by advice from Lucas Herrington, another Australian player who previously played for the Rapids. The transfer follows a trend of the Colorado Rapids recruiting young talent from the Australian league.
