Čakovec and Šenkovec commemorate 460th anniversary of Battle of Szigetvár
Commemorations were held in Čakovec and Šenkovec to mark the 460th anniversary of the Battle of Szigetvár, where Croatian nobleman and military commander Nikola Šubić Zrinski died defending against Ottoman forces on September 7, 1566.
The events highlighted the historical connection between Croatia and Hungary. In Čakovec, the program included the unveiling of the ‘Zrinski Bench – the Croatian-Hungarian Friendship Bench’ in the Zrinski Park, followed by wreath-laying ceremonies. In Šenkovec, participants gathered at the Zrinski family mausoleum for wreath-laying and speeches.
The ceremonies were attended by various state, military, and diplomatic representatives from Croatia and Hungary, including officials from Međimurje County, the city of Szigetvár, and members of the Zrinski Guard of Čakovec and Hungarian historical units. The commemorations concluded with a religious service and the presentation of a book titled ‘Who is Who in the Zrinski Family’ published in Hungarian.
