Akron fan's honorary offensive coordinator stint ends in fumble
Marty Whims II, an Akron alumnus and longtime season ticket holder, served as the honorary offensive coordinator for the Akron Zips' opening drive during their game against Robert Morris. The initiative, conceived by athletic director Andrew Goodrich, was part of a contest to increase fan engagement.
Whims worked with head coach Joe Moorhead to script the drive, which began with a successful 12-yard run. However, the possession ended after just four plays when wide receiver Marcel Williams fumbled the ball on a third-down attempt, allowing Robert Morris to recover.
The promotional contest gained significant social media traction, with announcement posts reaching over 20 million views. The program also contributed to a record number of new season-ticket memberships for the university.
