Akrotiri Antenna Project Sparks Protests in Cyprus

Residents of the Akrotiri area, together with organized groups and the Municipality of Kouriou, staged a peaceful demonstration on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. outside the British RAF Akrotiri base. The protest aimed to pressure authorities to halt the installation of new military antennas as part of a modernization project.

The British Bases Administration reiterated its respect for the right to lawful, peaceful protest and pledged continued transparency and dialogue with local communities. It highlighted that an independent scientific study found no increase in cancer rates or related health issues linked to radio‑frequency fields, noting that the main sources of such fields are mobile networks and national broadcast systems. The administration also expressed willingness to co‑fund a new independent study and affirmed that any land acquisition for the project will follow legal procedures, including compensation where required.
