Tokat health crisis: Thousands seek medical aid as water investigation begins

A significant health incident has occurred in Tokat, Turkey, where 2,914 people have sought medical attention for symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea since the evening of October 9, 2026. The outbreak, which initially affected children before spreading to adults, has resulted in 18 children receiving inpatient treatment, though their general health remains good.

In response to the surge in illnesses, the Tokat Governor's Office has suspended education for one day on Monday, October 12, 2026, across all official and private educational institutions and rehabilitation centers in the city center to facilitate comprehensive disinfection. Additionally, pregnant and disabled public employees will be granted administrative leave on that day.

Authorities are investigating a potential link to the municipal drinking water supply. Water samples from various locations in the city center have been sent to the Ankara Public Health Reference Laboratory for detailed analysis, with results expected within three days. While the Tokat Municipality has stated that technical assessments show it is impossible for sewage to mix with the pressurized drinking water system, officials have advised citizens to use bottled water for drinking and food preparation as a precaution until laboratory results are finalized.
