Toros Mountains producers see high demand for menengiç and carob products

In the Toros Mountains of Turkey, local residents are seeing significant economic activity through the harvest of menengiç (wild pistachio) and the production of organic carob molasses.

In the Akseki district of Antalya, the menengiç harvest has begun. Due to favorable rainfall, yields are high. The fruit is sold for 250–300 TL per kilogram, while its oil reaches 1,200 TL per liter. The production process follows a zero-waste approach, as the remaining pulp after oil extraction is sold as animal feed. The fruit is used for coffee, snacks, and various regional foods.

Simultaneously, in the Taşkesiği Plateau at an altitude of 1,800 meters, producer Gani Şahin is experiencing high demand for organic carob molasses. Şahin migrates from Manavgat to the plateau annually to process carob brought from the coast. The traditional method involves crushing the carob, soaking it, and boiling it in large cauldrons. The resulting molasses is highly sought after, particularly when consumed with Bozkır tahini, with demand so high that producers report being unable to take new orders.
