AKTOR CEO warns of European energy crisis and rising gas prices
Alexandros Exarchou, CEO of AKTOR Group, has warned of a potentially difficult energy winter in Europe, suggesting that natural gas prices could rise to 110 euros/MWh. Speaking at the 6th Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit, Exarchou noted that previous forecasts of 85 euros/MWh were likely too conservative, as prices have already approached 75 euros/MWh.
Exarchou emphasized that an energy price surge would exacerbate inflationary pressures and necessitate higher interest rates, creating a challenging macroeconomic environment that could discourage investment across Europe and Greece. He highlighted that geopolitical tensions, such as the conflict in Iran, are already contributing to price volatility.
To mitigate these risks, Exarchou proposed that the European Union consider collective action, such as issuing eurobonds or establishing a new mechanism similar to the Recovery and Resilience Facility, to provide a buffer against energy shocks. He also noted that while such measures are transitional, they are necessary to prevent long-term economic instability.
