Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals receives DCGI approval for Colchicine

Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals, India’s largest Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for Colchicine 0.5 mg tablets. This marks a first-time-in-India regulatory milestone for this specific application.

The approved Colchicine formulation is an anti-inflammatory agent intended to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary revascularisation, and cardiovascular death in adult patients with established atherosclerotic disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors. The medication works by inhibiting microtubule polymerisation, modulating inflammatory signalling pathways, and inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

The approval arrives amid significant growth in the Indian pharmaceutical market, particularly within the cardiac therapy segment. According to industry data, the cardiac therapy market recorded 14.7% year-on-year growth in July 2026.
