Akwa Ibom government mediates land disputes in Nsit Ibom
The Akwa Ibom State Government, through its Ministry of Lands and Town Planning, has initiated mediation efforts to resolve land disputes in the Nsit Ibom Local Government Area. The conflict involves the Mbak people, six host communities—including Mbiokporo, Afia Nsit, Mbak Nsit, Ikot Ntuen Nsit, Afaha Nsit, and Nduo Ebuo—as well as Ibom Mortgage Bank, Citadel Value Homes, and other stakeholders.
Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, Ubong Inyang, presided over a meeting in Uyo to encourage dialogue and prevent communal unrest. The government aims to find a middle ground that respects community interests and ensures appropriate indemnification while providing the legal certainty required for developers to proceed with projects.
Commissioner Inyang cautioned developers against making payments or entering agreements outside established government frameworks, warning that such actions could exacerbate disputes. The ministry stated it would provide necessary records if the matter proceeds to court but continues to urge an amicable settlement to maintain the stability required for regional economic growth.
