Akwa Ibom Police investigate officer after seven-year-old injured

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an investigation after a seven-year-old boy was injured during a routine stop-and-search operation in Uyo. The incident occurred on September 11, 2026, along Abak Road involving personnel from the Quick Response Squad (QRS).

According to preliminary reports, a smoke pistol was discharged by an officer during the encounter with a family's vehicle, resulting in an injury to the child's left hand. Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare has ordered an immediate and impartial probe into the matter.

Inspector Monday Okonta, the officer allegedly involved, has been identified, disarmed, and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Uyo. Commissioner Azare personally visited the child in the hospital to assess his condition and meet with the family, noting that the boy is currently in stable condition.
