Akyaka, Turkey Files Lawsuits Over Illegal Coastal Development Amid Port Work Disruptions

The Gökova Ecological Life Association lodged 17 separate criminal complaints with the Muğla Public Prosecutor’s Office, alleging that businesses along the Kadın Azmağı coast in Akyaka have built structures that violate the Turkish Coastal Law, exceed licence limits and restrict public access. The association says the illegal buildings were erected without planning permits, that the authorities were aware yet did nothing, and that the encroachments have turned the shoreline into a pay‑only zone. It announced a protest walk for 31 July to highlight the issue.

Following the recent transfer of Akyaka Port’s management to Kıyı Yönetim ve Çevre Koruma A.Ş., excavation and construction work has continued through the summer season. Local boat owners and waterfront cafés report severe loss of customers, difficulty reaching berths, and insufficient information about project timelines. About 32 boats operate in the area, with 22 involved in legal disputes over their licences. Complaints also cite unfair contract terms, electricity cuts, and unsecured mooring spaces, aggravating the economic impact on the community.
