Al-Ahli clarifies Riyad Mahrez departure was technical decision

Al-Ahli spokesperson Majed Al-Fahmi has clarified that the departure of Riyad Mahrez from the Saudi Arabian club was a purely technical decision rather than a financial one. This official statement contradicts previous rumors suggesting the move was motivated by the 35-year-old winger's high salary or the club's desire to reduce its wage bill.

According to Al-Fahmi, the decision was made by former coach Matthias Jaissle. The club noted that the departure of Ivorian midfielder Frank Kessié was also based on similar sporting reasons. The club spokesperson also cleared sporting director Rui Pedro of any responsibility regarding the matter.

To facilitate the separation, Al-Ahli reportedly activated a termination clause after three seasons, an operation estimated to have cost the club approximately $15 million. During his tenure with Al-Ahli, Mahrez made 122 appearances, recording 37 goals and 50 assists.
