Al Ahly extends Mohamed El Shenawy's contract until 2028

Al Ahly SC has officially extended the contract of captain and goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy for two additional seasons, keeping him with the club until the end of the 2027-2028 season. The 37-year-old veteran, who joined the club in 2016, has won numerous domestic and continental titles, including four CAF Champions League trophies.

The announcement follows a period of controversy involving Egypt national team manager Hossam Hassan. Hassan had previously made comments regarding El Shenawy’s form and his inclusion in the 2026 World Cup squad, which Al Ahly described as an “unacceptable transgression” against their captain. Hassan later clarified that his remarks were misunderstood and expressed his full respect for the goalkeeper.

Media analysts have noted that the extension underscores the club's reliance on El Shenawy's leadership and experience, despite his age. While some commentators have warned that the media dispute could impact the team's internal dynamics, particularly between El Shenawy and fellow goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier, the club has moved forward with the renewal to ensure stability for upcoming local and continental competitions.
