Al-Ahsa chairs UNESCO Creative Cities meeting in Bulgaria

Al-Ahsa chaired a meeting of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network focused on crafts and folk arts in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. The meeting included representatives from 20 creative cities worldwide.

Essam bin Abdulatif Al-Mulla, Mayor of Al-Ahsa, presented the city’s experience in utilizing culture and creativity to support sustainable development and social cohesion. He discussed the future of creative cities, emphasizing themes such as innovation, technology, human skills, and investment in the future. Al-Mulla highlighted the concept of ‘cultural resilience,’ noting that it involves not only protecting heritage but also evolving methods to pass it to future generations.

Regarding the role of technology, Al-Mulla stated that artificial intelligence and modern tools offer opportunities to enhance traditional skills and expand market reach for artisans without replacing the authenticity of the craft. Additionally, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Shubaith, coordinator for Al-Ahsa Creative, emphasized that culture serves as a ‘soft power’ for peace and a tool for fostering understanding between different communities.
