Al Ain completes 14km Ghaf tree windbreak to reduce sand encroachment

Al Ain City Municipality has completed a 14-kilometer windbreak project along Tahnoun Bin Mohammed Road. The initiative involved planting 1,807 Ghaf trees to create a natural green barrier designed to curb drifting sand and improve safety for motorists and nearby residential areas.

Technical studies suggest the windbreaks can reduce sand encroachment by 70% to 90% in protected areas, depending on vegetation density and wind direction. The project aims to minimize sand accumulation on the road, mitigate the impact of sandstorms, and reduce noise levels.

The Ghaf tree was selected for its ability to adapt to harsh desert environments. To ensure long-term sustainability, the project utilizes a high-efficiency irrigation system and dedicated maintenance programs to preserve vegetation density.
