Al-Amin Khalifa Fhimah, acquitted in Lockerbie bombing case, dies at 70

Al-Amin Khalifa Fhimah, the former Libyan Airlines station manager at Malta’s Luqa Airport who was acquitted in connection with the Lockerbie bombing, has died at age 70. His death was announced by Libyan Airlines, which expressed condolences to his family and colleagues.

Fhimah was one of two Libyan men indicted in 1991 for the December 21, 1988, bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed 270 people. While his co-accused, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was convicted of murder and later released on compassionate grounds before his death in 2012, Fhimah was acquitted of all charges in 2001.

The Lockerbie investigation remains active. A US federal judge recently postponed the trial of Abu Agila Mohammad Masud, another Libyan man accused of constructing the bomb used in the attack. Prosecutors allege Masud transported the device through Malta, a claim Maltese officials have strongly rejected.
