Al-Andalus Mosque: The historic legacy of the al-Fihri sisters in Fes

The Al-Andalus Mosque remains a significant symbol of Fes, Morocco, serving as a center for worship and knowledge for over a millennium. Built between 859 and 860 during the Idrisid period, the mosque was commissioned by Maryam al-Fihri.

Maryam and her sister, Fatima al-Fihri, used the wealth inherited from their father, the scholar Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Fihri, to establish major religious and educational landmarks in Fes. While Fatima founded the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque—which evolved into the world-renowned Al-Qarawiyyin University—Maryam established the Al-Andalus Mosque in the city's Al-Andalus neighborhood.

The sisters' contributions helped transform Fes into a cultural mosaic, bridging the influences of the Al-Andalus and Kairouan communities. While the Al-Qarawiyyin site transitioned into a global center for higher learning, the Al-Andalus Mosque has maintained its primary function as a place of worship.
