Al-Azhar Supreme Council approves separate internship year for veterinary students

The Al-Azhar Supreme Council, chaired by Grand Imam Ahmed el-Tayeb, has officially approved an amendment to the internal regulations of Al-Azhar University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The decision separates the mandatory internship year from the academic curriculum, establishing a structure of five years of study followed by a distinct, independent internship year. This change applies to both current and new students.

Dr. Magdy Hassan, the head of the Egyptian Veterinary Syndicate, described the move as a result of ongoing cooperation between the syndicate and Al-Azhar University to improve veterinary medical education and workforce readiness.

In conjunction with this structural change, the faculty is developing a proposal to provide monthly financial stipends to veterinary internship students, similar to those provided to human medicine and dentistry students. Dr. Hassan has also called upon the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research to implement similar internship structures across all public veterinary medicine faculties in Egypt to ensure educational uniformity and fairness.
