Al-Barraniya film to premiere at Chicago International Film Festival

The Egyptian film ‘Al-Barraniya’, the debut feature from Dutch-Egyptian director Ashjan Al-Hams, is set to have its North American premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival. The film will compete in the prestigious ‘New Directors’ category during the festival held from October 14 to 25.

Following its world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, the film offers a visual exploration of contemporary Egyptian life, focusing on themes of individual autonomy and rural traditions. The narrative follows Amal, a woman living in the village of Al-Barraniya, whose life is disrupted during her pregnancy when her family is offered the chance to sell their land.

Al-Hams drew inspiration from her family heritage in the Menofia Governorate of Egypt. To maintain authenticity, the director cast real members of her Egyptian family alongside professional actress Rim Amer. The production utilizes a mix of non-professional actors to create a documentary-like atmosphere, exploring the pressures of small-town life and diminishing opportunities.
