Al Jardine performs rare Beach Boys song in Ohio

Beach Boys co-founder Al Jardine recently performed the song ‘Back Home’ during a concert at the Robins Theatre in Warren, Ohio. This marked the first time Jardine has performed the track in approximately 50 years. The song, which features lyrical references to Ohio, holds personal significance for Jardine as he was born in Lima, Ohio, before moving to California.

Originally written by Brian Wilson and Bob Norberg in 1963, ‘Back Home’ was eventually released on the 1976 album ‘15 Big Ones’. While the band performed the track during the late 1970s, it had largely disappeared from their live repertoire for decades.

Historical context regarding the band reveals that The Beach Boys did not choose their own name. Originally performing as The Pendletones, the group was renamed by promoter Russ Regan after the name ‘The Surfers’ was found to be already in use. The band members reportedly only discovered the change when they saw their first records pressed.
