Al-Mazza Airport begins transition from military to civilian use

Rehabilitation works have commenced at Al-Mazza Airport in Damascus to reclassify the facility from a military installation to a limited-use civilian airport. The new designation will focus on private and executive aviation, serving as a complement to Damascus International Airport.

The Civil Aviation and Air Transport General Authority stated that the initial phase includes debris removal and the rehabilitation of air navigation infrastructure. These efforts are part of a broader plan to develop Syria’s civil aviation system, following the completion of technical, operational, environmental, and regulatory studies.

Work is being conducted in close coordination with the National Authority for Missing Persons. Authorities emphasized that precautions are being taken to protect sites suspected of containing mass graves or human remains. Specialized teams have identified specific areas requiring protective measures to ensure that evidence and remains are handled according to established procedures to preserve the dignity of victims.
