Al Michaels jokes about Trump’s lake-renaming proposal during NFL broadcast

During a preseason edition of Thursday Night Football, veteran play-by-play announcer Al Michaels made a satirical comment regarding President Donald Trump’s reported intention to rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’.

While the broadcast cameras panned across Lake Erie near Huntington Bank Field, Michaels remarked, ‘That is Lake Erie. We think it is still called Lake Erie — we’re not quite sure at this point. But we’ll be by Lake something like Ontario or whatever it’s going to be called by the time we get to Buffalo.’

Michaels did not mention the president by name, but the joke was interpreted as a reference to the ongoing political tension involving Canada. His broadcast partner, Kirk Herbstreit, laughed at the remark during the game.
