Somali National Army suffers heavy casualties in Al-Shabaab ambush

A major ambush by Al-Shabaab militants on a Somali National Army (SNA) convoy has resulted in significant casualties and equipment losses in the Lower Shabelle and Bay regions. The attack occurred on October 26 in the Jame’o area on the road between Leego and Burhakabo during Operation Banooda, a federal offensive aimed at reopening key transit routes.

Al-Shabaab claimed to have killed 321 government soldiers and seized various military assets, including armored vehicles, technicals, and weapons. While the Somali Ministry of Defence did not confirm specific troop deaths, it reported that federal forces killed approximately 75 militants and wounded 56 during the engagement. The ministry did acknowledge that militants used vehicle-borne explosives that damaged several military vehicles.

Conflicting reports from the field suggest high losses; one surviving officer reported seeing at least 20 dead, while other soldiers estimated dozens of fatalities and over 100 wounded. The convoy involved in the ambush reportedly consisted of approximately 2,000 troops and over 200 vehicles. The incident has prompted an emergency cabinet meeting to address the military setbacks.
