Çal to host 853rd Sheep Crossing Through Water Festival

The 853rd Sheep Crossing Through Water and Shepherd Festival is set to take place on August 22-23 in the Aşağıseyit neighborhood of Çal, Denizli. This tradition, recognized on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, commemorates a centuries-old legend of a Karakoyunlu tribe shepherd and the daughter of an Oğuz bey.

During the event, shepherds will lead their flocks through the Büyük Menderes River to the opposite bank. The program will feature demonstrations of flock management skills, traditional rituals, and various competitions. Local officials, including Aşağıseyit Neighborhood Mukhtar Saffet Oğuz, have invited visitors to witness the cultural heritage and the historical reenactment of the legendary love story.
