Van money laundering probe leads to arrest of social media influencers

An investigation into money laundering in Van, Turkey, has led to the arrest of social media influencer Çağla Öz Tançalan and her husband, Mehmet Fatih Tançalan, known as ‘Vanlı Kara Haydar’. The probe was triggered by viral footage of a lavish wedding featuring massive amounts of gold and luxury displays.

A forensic expert report has revealed that of the 97 pieces of jewelry examined, 76 were found not to be gold. The report identified 58 bracelets, various ingots, a two-meter chain, a belt, and a necklace as being non-gold. Only 19 pieces were confirmed as 8, 14, or 22-karat gold, with a total value of approximately 6.6 million Turkish Lira.

In her testimony, Çağla Öz Tançalan disputed her husband's claim that all jewelry was rented, stating she knew some items were purchased. She also claimed that announcements made during the wedding regarding 43 million Lira in gifts were fabricated for show. The Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) is continuing to examine the couple's financial transactions and luxury asset transfers.
