Alaafin of Oyo announces inaugural Oyo Empire Day for 2026

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade I, has conceived the “Oyo Empire Day,” a maiden celebration scheduled for December 17 to December 19, 2026. The initiative aims to provide a platform for individuals of Oyo ancestry from across the world to reconnect with their families and shared heritage.

Dr. Adekunle Ogunmola, Chairman of the Central Committee for the programme, stated that the event is intended to recognize historical connections rather than impose Oyo identity on other communities. The three-day celebration is expected to host approximately 60,000 visitors, including descendants from various Nigerian states, the Republic of Benin, and the wider diaspora. The long-term goal is to establish the event as an annual international homecoming to promote tourism, historical research, and economic development.
