Alaafin of Oyo urges government to prioritize education as a human right
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has urged the government to prioritize education and recognize it as a fundamental human right. Speaking during a visit from the governing council of the Federal College of Education (Special) in Oyo State, the monarch emphasized the necessity of adequate funding to ensure equal learning opportunities for all citizens, particularly those with disabilities.
Oba Owoade highlighted that special education is vital for preventing the waste of human potential. He noted that providing tailored instruction and tools to individuals with special needs fosters independence, prepares them for vocational success, and allows them to become self-reliant contributors to the economy. He argued that such inclusivity reduces poverty and honors the dignity of all citizens.
The monarch also expressed support for the Federal College of Education (Special), noting its status as a leading institution for special education in sub-Saharan Africa. He suggested the college possesses the necessary human resources and structures to achieve university status, provided it receives sufficient political backing and support.
