Alabama 2nd Congressional District race tightens
The race for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District is tightening as national attention turns toward the contest between incumbent Democrat Shomari Figures and Republican candidate Rhett Marques.
Recent polling suggests the race is narrowing, with analysts noting that potential high turnout among Black voters could assist Figures in maintaining control of the seat. This comes despite a redrawn congressional map affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court in June, which shifted the district in favor of the GOP by dismantling provisions that previously required the creation of majority-minority districts.
Policy differences are central to the campaign. Figures has criticized tariff policies, specifically introducing legislation to allow the import of 300,000 metric tons of beef to assist struggling farmers. Meanwhile, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has characterized Marques as a supporter of tax increases and policies that raise costs for working citizens.
