Alabama allocates $52 million for coastal projects

Governor Kay Ivey has announced $52 million in funding for 21 coastal Alabama projects, supported by the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act of 2006 (GoMESA). The investments are distributed across Mobile and Baldwin counties and aim to improve environmental education, water quality, conservation, and recreational access.

Major allocations include $9 million for the next phase of Brookley by the Bay in Mobile and $5 million each for the Alabama Port Authority’s Upper Mobile Bay Wetlands Creation project, improvements to the Byrnewood Boat Ramp, and the construction of the Jubilee Recreation and Fishing Pier in Daphne. Other significant funding includes $3 million for an outdoor classroom at the University of South Alabama and $2.2 million for a visitor center at the Dauphin Island Campground.

Additional projects will benefit communities such as Magnolia Springs, Orange Beach, and Bayou La Batre. According to the Governor’s office, more than $310 million in GoMESA projects have been awarded during the current administration.
