Lake Charles, Louisiana loses 7% of its residents after 2020 hurricanes

Between 2019 and 2020 Lake Charles, Louisiana experienced the nation’s highest out‑migration rate. A sharp drop in oil prices followed by Hurricanes Laura (August 2020, 150 mph winds) and Delta (October 2020) damaged roughly half the housing stock in Calcasieu Parish, with more than a quarter of homes suffering major loss. City officials estimate that about 5,000 people – roughly 7 % of the pre‑storm population – permanently left the city.

Recovery has been uneven. Wealthier, predominantly white neighborhoods have seen faster rebuilding and return of residents, while majority‑Black areas in northern Lake Charles remain sparsely repopulated. A state‑run relief program, Louisiana Restore, continues to distribute aid, but progress is slow four years after the storms.
