Alabama enacts Ten Commandments school display law amid nationwide legal challenges

Alabama's legislature approved a law requiring Ten Commandments posters in certain public school classrooms beginning Jan. 1, a measure praised by House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter as a "major win" for the state. The law follows a wave of similar proposals in the South, with displays already present in Alabama, Louisiana and Texas schools.

Legal challenges to mandated religious displays continue elsewhere. In Texas, three parents have sued under the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act and a recent parental‑rights amendment, while Arkansas and Tennessee are also contesting court rulings that block such postings. Several other states have rejected comparable bills since 2025, citing Supreme Court precedents.

The Alabama law allows the Ten Commandments to be shown alongside historical documents such as the Declaration of Independence preamble and the U.S. Constitution preamble, framing the displays as educational about the nation’s cultural heritage.
