Alabama executes Jeremy Williams for 2021 murder of child
Alabama executed 42-year-old Jeremy Williams via lethal injection on Thursday for the 2021 rape and murder of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland. Williams had previously pleaded guilty to four counts of capital murder and requested an immediate execution to provide the victim's family with closure.
During the proceedings, Williams declined to pursue legal avenues that could have challenged his conviction or sentence. He instructed his lawyer not to object to constitutional errors and did not present mitigating evidence during his sentencing hearing. While Williams expressed a desire to die in peace, local officials and prosecutors noted the horrific nature of the crime, which involved the filming of the assault.
The Equal Justice Initiative raised concerns regarding the intersection of the death penalty with admissions of guilt and mental health, noting that Williams' decision to forgo appeals and mitigating evidence led to his death sentence.
