Alabama Governor supports federal trucking industry crackdown

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has expressed support for a federal crackdown on fraud and illegal activity within the commercial trucking industry. Highlighting state-level enforcement, Ivey noted that the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Motor Carrier Safety Unit has partnered with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain 561 individuals for immigration violations during commercial vehicle enforcement activities since October 27, 2025.

Additionally, ALEA troopers have issued 1,022 English Language Proficiency (ELP) violations to commercial drivers since January 1, 2025. These efforts align with the upcoming implementation of the Highway Safety and Fairness Act on October 1, 2026. The law requires foreign commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders in Alabama to possess valid U.S. work authorization, mandates English-language proficiency for all CDL holders, and makes presenting a fraudulent foreign CDL a criminal offense.

Governor Ivey reported that Alabama has seen a 24% decrease in commercial vehicle crash fatalities so far in 2026 compared to the same period last year.
