Alabama health officials issue rabies warning after Baldwin County bat bites
The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has issued a warning urging residents to avoid handling bats following reports of several individuals receiving treatment for bat bites at various residences in Baldwin County.
While the patients are currently receiving preventive treatment, none of the involved bats have undergone rabies testing. Health officials emphasize that rabies is fatal once symptoms develop, making prompt medical evaluation essential after any potential exposure via bites or scratches.
State Public Health Veterinarian Dr. Dee W. Jones advised that bats found inside homes, dormitories, or nursing homes require particular caution, as individuals may not realize contact has occurred. If a bat is found indoors, officials recommend safely capturing and securing the animal for testing rather than releasing it. Residents are advised to seek emergency care immediately after potential exposure and to never handle wildlife with bare hands.
