Alabama holds special congressional primaries under new maps

Alabama voters participated in special primary elections for four congressional districts following a controversial redistricting process. The new maps, approved after a U.S. Supreme Court decision, aim to reduce the number of majority-Black districts in the state.

In the 2nd Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Shomari Figures is seeking a second term unopposed in the primary. He faces a challenge in the general election from six Republican candidates, including state Representative Rhett Marques, who has received an endorsement from Donald Trump. The redistricting has shifted the district's Black population from a majority to approximately 40%.

In the 7th Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Terri Sewell also ran unopposed in the primary and is expected to maintain her seat in the general election. The special elections were postponed from their original May schedule by Governor Kay Ivey to accommodate the new boundary lines, which are set to take effect in January 2027.
