Alabama Independent School Association to end athletics program

The Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Board of Trustees has voted to end its administration of interscholastic athletics following the 2026–2027 school year. While the organization will cease sanctioning sports, it will continue to operate by focusing on academic services, accreditation, professional development, and advocacy for its more than 100 member schools.

The decision follows significant restructuring within Alabama’s high school sports landscape, including the formation of the Gulf States Independent Athletic Association and the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s (AHSAA) split between public and private institutions for championship competition.

Currently, AISA sanctions various sports including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and volleyball. Of the 108 schools under AISA, 66 rely on the association for sports, though only 44 of those field at least one athletic team. Moving forward, individual schools will need to find new affiliations to continue their athletic programs.
