Alabama legal updates: Prison guard charged and murder cases progress
In Alabama, a former Department of Corrections employee, Melvin Ledarrius Thomas, has been indicted on two counts, including reckless manslaughter, following the death of Antwion Webb. Webb, 45, died in September 2025 after being stabbed in the chest by another inmate at the Donaldson Correctional Facility. The indictment alleges that Thomas recklessly returned Webb to the general population despite knowing of his injuries or failed to provide necessary medical care.
In a separate legal development in Mobile County, Deanta Dubose has been placed on a fast-track court docket. Dubose is the accused killer of 22-year-old Vanol Lucky.
Additionally, the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals denied a request from Loretta Carr to withdraw a guilty plea regarding a murder in DeKalb County, in which she admitted to pushing a woman off a cliff.
