Keelon Russell named Alabama starting quarterback

The University of Alabama has named sophomore Keelon Russell as the starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Russell, a former five-star prospect and the 2025 Gatorade National Player of the Year, won the position following a highly publicized competition against senior Austin Mack.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer and the coaching staff selected Russell, a dual-threat playmaker from Duncanville, Texas, to lead the Crimson Tide offense. Russell previously appeared in two games during his freshman season, recording 143 passing yards and two touchdowns. He is noted for his high upside and ability to extend plays outside the pocket.

Austin Mack, a senior and former Washington transfer, will remain on the roster as a backup. Alabama is scheduled to open its season at home against East Carolina on September 5.
