Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback battle remains even

The Alabama Crimson Tide continues to evaluate its starting quarterback during fall camp for the 2026 season. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has described the competition between junior Austin Mack and sophomore Keelon Russell as an “even battle,” noting that neither player has yet created significant separation.

Grubb emphasized that the coaching staff is looking for more than physical ability, specifically prioritizing “command” of the offense, decision-making, and how players respond to adversity during practice. The upcoming first scrimmage is expected to serve as a critical measuring stick for both candidates.

While Mack enters the competition with more experience in head coach Kalen DeBoer’s system, Russell has made a strong push after serving as a third-stringer last season. Meanwhile, the program faces broader scrutiny regarding DeBoer’s tenure and the team's ability to return to national championship prominence.
