Alabama officials warn of illegal kratom products sold as harmless drinks

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) are warning the public about the dangers of kratom and products containing the substance. Although kratom is a controlled substance and illegal in Alabama, officials report that it is being sold in retail locations, such as gas stations and vape shops, disguised as harmless beverages, shots, or “feel-good” products intended to promote relaxation or energy.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor emphasized that products sold over the counter should not automatically be considered safe, noting that many items lack clear labeling. Since 2025, the ALEA and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office have been investigating citizen complaints regarding potentially addictive products sold at retail locations throughout the state through undercover purchases and laboratory testing.
