Alabama quarterback race tips toward Keelon Russell as competition heats up

Former Alabama star Mark Ingram II said Keelon Russell currently holds the edge in the Crimson Tide’s quarterback battle, though a starter has not yet been announced. The contest pits sophomore Russell against senior Austin Mack, with head coach Kalen DeBoer noting both players are capable starters.

Russell is praised for his precise ball placement and ability to deliver deep throws under pressure, while Mack is recognized for his size, arm strength and pocket discipline. Critics note Mack can be overly forceful on short routes and sometimes hesitates, whereas Russell’s accuracy is offset by a slimmer frame and a tendency to take big shots.

Both quarterbacks will continue to compete in fall camp, and their performance will influence Alabama’s chances to contend for a national championship.
